Mental Impairments
There are many limitations that a person can have as a result of mental impairments and many of these can be severe enough to establish disability.
We always want to show how these impairments effect a persons ability to do the following:
- Maintaining persistence and pace required to perform work activity
- Maintaining concentration
- Remember information required in the work place
- Deal with work stresses
- Get along with co-workers and supervisors
- Handle criticism and instructions in the work place
- Deal with the public
Mental impairments such as the following can result in severely restricting a person’s ability to perform work activity:
- Bi-polar disorder
- Depression
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Agoraphobia (fear of unfamiliar places)
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Developmental disabilities
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Personality disorders (also called character disorders)
- Schizophrenia
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Autism
It is very important that your attorney understand how these conditions can be used to prove disability. It is also important that your attorney understand such things as Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scores which are used by psychiatric professionals to determine the severity of a person’s illness at a specific point in time.
